Taurine is a naturally occurring amino acid-like nutrient found in muscle and nerve tissue. It has become a popular ingredient in pre and post workout formulations and is also widely studied as a single-ingredient powder. Taurine has been investigated for its potential roles in antioxidant activity, exercise performance, recovery and cellular balance.
Research Context
Taurine is known to act as an antioxidant¹ and to play a role in cellular osmoregulation, which supports hydration and nutrient transport². Early research has explored taurine’s involvement in endurance and energy metabolism², while more recent studies have reported benefits when taurine is consumed alongside exercise - including reduced DNA damage, lower lactate build up, improved fat metabolism and markers of recovery⁴⁵.
Studies have investigated Taurine in relation to:
- Supporting antioxidant activity¹
- Supporting endurance and energy metabolism²
- Supporting aspects of cellular hydration and nutrient balance²
- Supporting recovery and performance measures⁴⁵
- Supporting aspects of overall physiological balance (antioxidant and recovery context)¹⁵
Additional Notes
It is an amino acid like nutrient that some studies have shown it may support the regulation of muscle contractions, boosting energy, endurance, recovery, performance and overall well-being.
In 2021, studies reported taurine supplementation during exercise was associated with decreased oxidative stress, reduced lactate, improved VO₂ max, increased time to exhaustion and favourable inflammatory markers⁴⁵.

Excellent Pre-Workout Additive
By: Dan Macdonald on 19 December 2015I've been using Taurine in conjunction with Beta-Alanine and Ajinomoto BCAA's for several months now. Once the Beta Alanine has given you a physiological effect (usually mild tingling in the extremities) I have noticed that I feel more alert, awake and energised for my training. My intensification periods normally leave me feeling a little sapped of energy but my stamina has definitely increased and recovery time between workouts has taken a noticeable decline. Fantastic supplement for those needing extra support during demanding training cycles.
