Vibram FiveFingers Review - September 2009

Having been running now for 25 years, (9 of these at a high level of competition) I was looking forward to entering my first Fun Run in many years. Now 38 years old I run for fitness and to keep my pack of working dogs in a healthy calm submissive state. I train Bloodhounds to search for lost and missing persons as a volunteer.

I recently purchased a pair of Vibram Five Finger Sprints.  For many years I have always thought to myself  "why has no shoe company just made a sticky sole that would allow a runner to run as close to barefoot as humanly possible?" Well, now my thoughts are well answered.

I bought my Vibram Five Finger Sprints from Professional Whey on Thursday. Wore them all day Friday, Saturday and run an 8 km road race in them on Sunday at the Bathurst Edgel Jog.

I was not at all worried about the hard surface and everybody saying to me "You are actually gonna run in them!”   I had read the advice regarding a trial period of breaking the shoes in, but being the type of person I am I had faith in my ability and in the Five Fingers. I ran that race in 32:34 having not entered a race since 1999 I thought hum, not bad for an old bloke. But what about my feet?

I had to learn in 48 hours how to walk and run naturally again. With Vibram Five Fingers on you can do this instantly. Hills have always been my forte and the vibrams felt like I was in a race all my own. I had a feeling of total freedom and well being I never experienced before. You have to run like you would if you were in the wild and on the downhill a heel strike is not possible you have to run with better normal fluid movement more reliant on youre feeling rather than out of force. Its very hard to describe but you feel more at one with the earth more in control of your perception of the action called running, they make you aware and more in tune with your body.

I heard many people whisper hey look at that bloke he is running in socks or what are they on his feet.
I handed out 10 leaflets on the day to people who asked me about the footwear.  I am convinced that Vibrams force you to run with a better appreciation of the human body as a natural source of shock absorption and smoothness unable to be achieved in what I know as normal running shoes.

I would like your readers to understand one thing dont try my way of "hitting the ground running" in the five fingers. I am a very tough runner having run 25 marathons before the age of 21. Still holding the fastest under 18 marathon time in Australia and running a number of ultra events before the age of 18. Your calves will know what is going on way before your mind will allow you the forgiveness they deserve. After that shock you will never strap a pair of EVA, AIR or Gel boxes to your feet ever again.

So impressed am I with My Vibram Five Fingers  I will be adding to my collection in form of the KSO and the Classics. Three pairs to switch between. I would have spent well over $20,000 in running shoes over 25 years and at $380 for the most expensive shoe I have ever brought I cant see myself doing so ever again.

Thanks for reading my report  in regard to the best footwear I now own...bummer for me as a builder as  I have to wear OH&S approved steel toe caps on Monday... so unless Vibram can make a steel toe attachment I will be forced to take my Five Fingers to wear to and from the worksite..

PS... Its ten hours since I ran on the hard road for 8 km in My Vibrams.... I wont lie I am sun burnt, as for my feet and calves they feel great.

I will be going for a 5 km run with my dogs tomorrow and like them... as close to nature intended in My Vibram Five Fingers

I look forward to promoting Vibram Five Fingers to my running peers, dog owners and all I come in contact with.

I have been buying protein powder for the last 4 or so years, and I have tasted many different brands and flavours, and have spent a fortune on some of the brands! In the end, I realised that I didn`t  need to spend all that money on that "fancy smanshy" protein powder that had all the additives and flavours and came in pretty colourful tubs (which we, as the consumers pay for). All I wanted was to spend my money on good quality pure protein that didn`t have all the additives that "do miracles".
