    Being a powdery substance it can also be used in raw mixtures where other vanilla extracts would not get a chance to impart their flavor evenly and thoroughly.

     

    Avoiding Synthetic Vanilla & ‘Natural Vanilla Flavour’

    The natural vanilla bean is the most expensive crop to grow and produce due to the intense labour that goes into extracting oil from the bean.  Because it’s so expensive, companies searched for a cheaper option.

     

    Synthetic Vanilla Flavouring

    Synthetic vanilla copies the smell of vanilla.  It’s a counterfeit and made from chemicals. 

    We recommend that you don’t buy it or put it in your body! The reason is because the most popular synthetic vanilla is made from a petrochemical raw material from coal tar called guaiacol.  Coal tar is chemically processed to replicate natural vanillin.   However it is consumed in small quantities so that the harsh chemical flavour doesn’t taint the food.

     

    The second most common version is made from paper mill waste from a compound called lignin.  In the early 1900’s, the Ontario Paper Company had no way to dispose of huge amounts of sulphite liquor laced with lignin, which was polluting the local water ways.  However they realized that this waste had something that smelled like vanilla.  And so a new synthetic form of vanilla was created.   Lignin, which binds together the fibres in wood, is a waste product produced by the paper mill.  To remove lignin from the wood fibre, they boiled the wood with caustic salt.  This waste is called black liquor or sulphide liquor which is the raw material for vanilla synthesis.

     

    ‘Natural Vanilla Flavour’ ???

    We recommend that you read the labels carefully.  The company that makes most of the World’s ‘natural flavoured vanilla’ is not using vanilla beans but an extract from rice bran.  Because rice bran is natural, they are permitted to sell the extract as ‘natural vanilla flavouring’. However it is a biosynthetic vanilla prepared by the action of microorganisms on ferulic acid extracted from rice bran.

     

    Other Uses

    There are multiple uses of organic vanilla powder in modern times. Adding a small quantity can increase the flavour and texture of almost all instant beverages. The organic vanilla powder can be added in cooking, hot drinks, milk shakes and smoothies. In addition its fragrance calms, relaxes and softens anger, frustrations and irritability

     

    Storage

    Organic vanilla powder should be kept tightly-sealed, in a cool, dry place away from direct light and heat.  It stays intact for a long time and gives the exotic flavour if sprinkled in a very low quantity on any kind of food material
